Student Accommodation in India: Hostels, PGs and Flats

Finding the right place to live makes a huge difference to your time in India. These are your three main options.

1. University hostels

On-campus hostels are usually the safest and most convenient choice for new students. Meals are often included and you are close to classes. Rooms may be shared, and hostels have rules such as curfew times.

2. PG (Paying Guest) accommodation

A PG is a furnished room in a private house or building, usually with meals and laundry. It offers more freedom than a hostel. Visit before you pay and check the house rules.

3. Shared flats

Senior students often rent flats together. This gives the most independence, and you can cook your own food. You will handle rent agreements, deposits, bills and furniture yourself.

Tips

  • Stay in the university hostel for your first semester while you learn the city.
  • Always get a written rental agreement and receipts.
  • Your address is needed for FRRO registration, so keep it updated.
  • Ask senior African students for trusted landlords.
