FRRO Registration Guide for International Students

Most foreign students staying in India on a student visa must register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). It is now done mostly online through the e-FRRO system.

When to register

Registration must normally be completed within a set period after arrival; your visa will state if registration is required. Don’t delay. Late registration can lead to penalties.

Typical documents

  • Passport and visa
  • Recent photo
  • Bonafide (enrolment) certificate from your university
  • Proof of residence in India

Steps

  1. Your university usually guides you and may submit details on your behalf.
  2. Create an account on the official e-FRRO portal.
  3. Fill in the application and upload your documents.
  4. Download your registration certificate and keep it safe.

Also use e-FRRO later to extend your visa or update your address. Rules change, so always follow the official portal and your university’s international office.
