Every year, thousands of students from Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and the rest of Africa choose India for their university studies. Here is why India is one of the smartest study-abroad choices for African students, and what to think about before you go.
1. Affordable, high-quality education
Tuition in India is often far lower than in the UK, USA, Canada or Australia, and living costs are much more affordable too. Public universities can be especially good value, while private universities offer a wide choice of modern programmes, often with merit scholarships for international students.
2. Degrees taught in English
Most university programmes in India are taught in English, so students from English-speaking African countries can start their studies without learning a new language.
3. A huge choice of courses
India offers programmes in almost every field, including engineering, computer science and IT, business (BBA and MBA), law, pharmacy, nursing, agriculture and the arts, at diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. levels.
4. Scholarships for African students
The Government of India’s ICCR India-Africa Maitri Scholarship is fully funded and open to students from many African countries. Many universities also offer their own fee discounts. Read our guide: ICCR Scholarship for African Students.
5. A simpler student visa process
India’s e-Student visa lets students admitted through the Study in India portal apply for their visa online. See our step-by-step guide: Indian Student Visa for African Students.
6. Strong ties between India and Africa
India and African countries have long-standing educational and trade links. Many Indian campuses already have active African student communities, which makes settling in much easier.
Things to plan for
- Choose a recognised university. Check that your institution and course are properly recognised before you pay any fees.
- Budget carefully. Include accommodation, food, insurance and travel, not just tuition.
- Prepare for a new culture and climate. India is diverse, with different food, languages and weather in each region.
