India has hundreds of universities, and choosing the right one is the most important decision you will make before you travel. Here are seven things every student from Africa should check before applying or paying any fees.
1. Is the university recognised by the UGC?
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is the body that recognises universities in India. Check that your university appears on the UGC’s official list at ugc.gov.in. A degree from an unrecognised institution may not be accepted at home or by employers.
2. What is its NAAC accreditation?
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) grades universities on quality. A higher NAAC grade is a good sign that the university has strong teaching and facilities.
3. Is your course approved?
Some courses need extra approval. Engineering and technical programmes are approved by the AICTE, law by the Bar Council of India, and medical and nursing courses by their own regulators. If you plan to work in your home country, also check that your professional body there accepts the qualification.
4. How does it rank?
India’s government publishes the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) every year. It is a useful way to compare universities, though rank is only one factor.
5. What are the full costs?
Ask for a written breakdown of tuition, hostel, food, exam and registration fees for the whole course, not just the first year. Ask whether the university offers scholarships or fee discounts for international students.
6. Does it support international students?
A good university will have an international students’ office to help with visas, FRRO registration, accommodation and settling in. An existing African student community on campus also makes life much easier.
7. Where is it located?
India’s cities differ a lot in cost of living, climate and lifestyle. Think about which environment suits you and your budget before you decide.
