Missing or incorrect documents are the most common reason applications get delayed. Use this checklist to prepare everything you need for admission, your visa and your arrival in India. Exact requirements vary by university and course, so always confirm with your institution.

For university admission

  • Passport (valid for the length of your course if possible)
  • School leaving certificates and results (for Bachelor’s programmes)
  • Degree certificates and transcripts (for Master’s and Ph.D. programmes)
  • Proof of English ability, if your university asks for it
  • Passport-size photos
  • Statement of purpose and recommendation letters, for some postgraduate courses

For your student visa

  • Admission offer letter from a recognised Indian institution
  • Study in India (SII) ID, if you are applying for the e-Student visa
  • Proof of funds for tuition and living costs
  • Any extra clearances needed for your course, such as for medical studies

For arrival in India

  • Printed copies of your visa, offer letter and fee receipts
  • Travel and medical insurance
  • Original certificates. Your university will usually verify them
  • Extra passport photos for FRRO registration, a SIM card and a bank account

Tips to avoid delays

  • Make sure your name is spelled the same way on every document.
  • Get certified copies and, where required, attested documents early. Attestation can take weeks.
  • Scan everything and keep a digital copy in your email or cloud storage.
